Back on Colonsay – Where New Maritime Stories Are Born

I’m pleased to say that I’m back on the beautiful Isle of Colonsay for a while, overseeing work on the cottage while also taking the opportunity to enjoy one of Scotland’s most inspiring landscapes.

As always, the sea has a habit of stirring the imagination.

Although my latest book, Costa Concordia, is now complete and moving through its editing stage, my notebook is already filling with ideas for future investigations. Unsurprisingly, every one of them has a maritime flavour.

Ships, naval history, unexplained events, famous disasters and forgotten stories continue to capture my attention. After spending much of my own life at sea in the Royal Navy, they are subjects that never seem far away.

Writing these books is rarely about sensationalism. Instead, I try to understand the people involved, examine the evidence, and reconstruct events as accurately as possible. Every new project starts with a simple question:

What really happened?

Colonsay provides the perfect environment for that kind of thinking. Away from the distractions of everyday life, it’s possible to sit quietly, listen to the wind and the sea, and allow new ideas to develop naturally.

I can’t reveal the next title just yet, but I can say that several promising maritime investigations are already taking shape.
