The Murder, The Gallows, and the Case That Refused to Die
My latest nonfiction title examines one of Britain’s most controversial criminal cases: the A6 murder and the conviction of James Hanratty.
The A6 Murder: James Hanratty — The Murder, The Gallows, and the Case That Refused to Die traces the case from the crime and investigation through the trial, execution and subsequent efforts to challenge the verdict.
The book examines the identification evidence, competing accounts, questions raised by campaigners, and the later DNA evidence. It follows how the arguments developed and how subsequent findings affected the debate.
Throughout, the aim is to make a complicated history understandable while keeping documented facts, official conclusions and disputed claims clearly distinguished.
The case also raises a question that reaches beyond Hanratty: how should a justice system respond when doubts persist about a conviction after an irreversible punishment?
For me, these are the subjects that make documentary nonfiction worth writing. The evidence matters, the decisions matter, and so do the people who live with their consequences.
The victims remain central to this account. Their suffering must be remembered alongside the controversy over the man convicted.
If you are interested in British criminal history, disputed convictions and the history of capital punishment, I hope you will find this a worthwhile addition to your reading.
