Some stories stay with us because we remember exactly when we first heard the news. The murder of Jill Dando is one of them.
My latest book, Jill Dando — The Murder That Remains Unsolved, is now available on Amazon.
On 26 April 1999, Jill was shot outside her home in Fulham. A familiar and much-loved face on British television, she had become part of everyday life for millions of viewers. Her death brought shock, grief and a question that has endured: who killed her?
I wanted to write about both the woman behind the familiar face and the investigation that followed her death. The book traces Jill’s journey from local journalism to national broadcasting, before examining the police enquiry, the evidence and the court proceedings.
It also follows the prosecution of Barry George, whose conviction was quashed in 2007 and who was acquitted at a retrial in 2008. Those outcomes are essential to understanding the case and the questions that remain.
Over the years, numerous theories have competed for attention. In this book, I consider what the available record supports, where claims remain disputed and where an answer is still missing. Readers deserve to see the distinction between evidence and speculation.
Above all, Jill deserves to be remembered as a person whose life and achievements reached far beyond the circumstances of her death.
