The Emerald Isle, Fresh Inspiration, and the Stories Waiting Beyond the Horizon
Every author has moments when inspiration seems to arrive unexpectedly.
For me, this latest spark came while travelling around Ireland in my motorhome.
There is something wonderfully unhurried about exploring the Emerald Isle. Historic harbours, fishing villages, old stone buildings and dramatic coastlines all have a way of slowing you down and encouraging you to look a little closer.
As someone who writes narrative history, that's a gift.
During this trip I completed the latest book in my Critical Hours series, Apollo 13, telling the incredible true story of NASA's greatest rescue mission. It seemed fitting to finish a book about an extraordinary journey while enjoying one of my own.
But travelling has also reminded me where many of my interests began.
Ships.
Shipbuilding.
Maritime history.
The engineering that allows ordinary people to achieve extraordinary things.
Those themes have been quietly finding their way back into my notebook, and I have a feeling readers will see much more of them in the months ahead.
Whether it's a famous ocean liner, an offshore drilling rig, or another remarkable chapter from our industrial heritage, I'm always drawn towards stories where real people face extraordinary moments.
That's exactly what the Critical Hours series is all about.
I'm looking forward to getting home, putting the kettle on, and turning those notes into the next book.
Until then, thank you for reading, thank you for your support, and thank you for joining me on this writing journey.
The next adventure is already beginning.
