The Henry Julius Jacoby Case: Murder, Mercy and the Gallows

The Henry Julius Jacoby Case: Murder, Mercy and the Gallows

My latest book project returns to London in 1922 and a murder case remembered not only for its verdict, but for the request that accompanied it.

Henry Julius Jacoby, a pantry boy at the Spencer Hotel, was convicted of murdering Lady Alice White. His jury strongly recommended mercy because its members did not believe he had entered her bedroom intending to kill. The judge passed the death sentence and forwarded their recommendation to the Home Secretary. (paperspast.natlib.govt.nz)

The request did not save him. Jacoby was executed on 7 June 1922 despite efforts to obtain a reprieve, including an appeal to the King. (paperspast.natlib.govt.nz)

His story became linked to Ronald True, another convicted murderer who was spared execution following medical certification of insanity. That contrast helped turn two criminal cases into a wider argument about justice and the exercise of mercy. (hansard.parliament.uk)

In The Henry Julius Jacoby Case: Murder, Mercy and the Gallows in 1922 London, I examine the crime, investigation, trial and controversy through the documentary record.

The approach is the same one I bring to my other nonfiction: establish where an account originated, distinguish evidence from interpretation and acknowledge what cannot safely be reconstructed.

There is no invented dialogue and no attempt to turn unanswered questions into proof of innocence. Lady Alice White remains central to the account, rather than becoming a footnote to the debate about her killer’s punishment.

At the heart of the book is a question which deserves careful consideration: what should happen when the people who find a defendant guilty also ask that his life be spared?

Read the accompanying “Henry Julius Jacoby: What Happened?” page for an introduction to the case.
