On the evening of 13 January 2012, the cruise ship Costa Concordia was sailing close to the Italian island of Giglio.

What Was Costa Concordia?
Costa Concordia was a large passenger cruise ship operated by Costa Crociere, part of the Carnival group.

Passengers had already experienced the collision and blackout.
Some were concerned enough to begin gathering near lifeboat stations.
Yet announcements initially reassured them that the situation involved an electrical problem.
The general emergency alarm was not sounded immediately.
The order to abandon ship came only after the situation had deteriorated significantly.
By then, the vessel’s increasing list made the evacuation far more difficult.
Minutes mattered.

The Evacuation

Salvaging Costa Concordia
Removing the wreck became a huge engineering operation.

Simply cutting the ship apart where she lay risked environmental damage.
Engineers developed an extraordinary recovery plan.
The first major stage involved parbuckling — rotating the ship upright using cables, platforms and enormous external flotation structures.
