Jill Dando — What Happened?

Jill Dando — What Happened?

On 26 April 1999, television presenter Jill Dando was shot outside her home in Gowan Avenue, Fulham. She was 37 years old. Her death shocked a country that knew her from programmes including Crimewatch, Holiday and the BBC news. (ucl.ac.uk)

Jill had begun her career in local journalism in Weston-super-Mare before moving to the BBC. By 1999, she was one of Britain’s best-known broadcasters. The murder brought intense public attention, but the person at the centre of the story was more than a familiar face on television: she was a journalist, colleague, daughter and bride-to-be. The investigation and the court case

Police investigated Jill’s movements, witness accounts and possible motives. Barry George was arrested and, in July 2001, convicted of her murder. A significant part of the prosecution case concerned a single particle of firearms discharge residue found in a pocket of his coat. (ccrc.gov.uk)

The forensic evidence was later reassessed. The Criminal Cases Review Commission obtained fresh expert evidence that called into question the significance given to the particle at George’s trial. His conviction was quashed in November 2007, and a new trial was ordered. In August 2008, the retrial jury found him not guilty. (ccrc.gov.uk, judiciary.uk)

That outcome must remain clear when discussing the case. George was acquitted of Jill Dando’s murder. The acquittal did not identify someone else as the killer.

Why is the case still unsolved?

Many explanations have been proposed over the years. A theory can suggest a line of enquiry, but it cannot establish who fired the shot without evidence strong enough to support that conclusion. No one has been convicted of Jill’s murder following George’s acquittal.

The court proceedings answered an important question about his conviction: it could not stand. They did not answer the question Jill’s family and the public had asked since April 1999 — who killed her, and why?

Remembering Jill

It is easy for an unsolved murder to become a collection of suspects and theories. Jill’s life deserves its place in the account. Her work reached millions of viewers, and her name lives on through University College London’s Jill Dando Institute, which researches crime and security. (ucl.ac.uk)

My book,  Jill Dando — The Murder That Remains Unsolved,

follows her life, the investigation, the evidence presented in court and the questions left open after the retrial. It treats competing explanations as possibilities to examine, never as proven answers.
