 What the Evidence Shows—and Why the Aircraft Has Never Been Found

On 8 March 2014, Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 departed Kuala Lumpur for Beijing.

There were 239 people aboard — 227 passengers and 12 crew.

The Boeing 777 never arrived.

Instead, the aircraft disappeared from conventional air traffic control, changed course, crossed back over the Malay Peninsula and continued flying for hours before its final satellite communication placed it somewhere along a vast arc extending into the southern Indian Ocean. More than a decade later, the main wreckage has still not been located.

MH370 has become one of the greatest mysteries in modern aviation — not because nothing is known, but because investigators possess an extraordinary collection of evidence without the one piece that could answer many of the remaining questions:

the aircraft itself.

What happened to MH370?

Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 was a scheduled passenger service from Kuala Lumpur International Airport to Beijing Capital International Airport.

The aircraft was a Boeing 777-200ER, registration 9M-MRO.

After departing Kuala Lumpur shortly after midnight, the flight initially proceeded normally.

Then, as the aircraft approached the boundary between Malaysian and Vietnamese airspace, communication with air traffic control ceased.

The aircraft’s transponder signal disappeared from secondary radar.

But MH370 did not simply fall from the sky at that point.

Military radar subsequently indicated that an aircraft believed to be MH370 had turned back across the Malay Peninsula before travelling northwest towards the Andaman Sea.

The mystery had changed completely.

Investigators were no longer searching merely for an aircraft that had suffered a sudden accident on its planned route.

They were dealing with an aircraft that had apparently continued flying after communications were lost.

The last words from MH370

The final routine radio communication from the cockpit came as MH370 was being transferred between Malaysian and Vietnamese air traffic control.

Shortly afterwards, attempts to establish normal communication with the aircraft failed.

No recognised distress call was transmitted.

No emergency was declared.

No message explaining a mechanical failure, fire, hijacking or other crisis was received.

That absence of communication remains one of the defining features of the disappearance.

Whatever happened aboard MH370, the aircraft continued flying without providing those on the ground with a clear explanation.

The turn back

Radar information became crucial.

Evidence showed that after disappearing from civilian secondary radar, the aircraft deviated from its planned route.

It travelled westwards across the Malay Peninsula and towards the Strait of Malacca.

This indicated that MH370 had undergone a substantial change of course.

How that change occurred — and why — became one of the central questions of the investigation.

Was the aircraft deliberately redirected?

Was the crew responding to an emergency?

Was somebody else controlling the aircraft?

The available evidence has never allowed investigators to answer those questions definitively.

The satellite evidence

One of the most remarkable aspects of the MH370 investigation came from a system never designed to track missing aircraft.

After normal communications had ceased, equipment aboard MH370 continued making automated exchanges with an Inmarsat communications satellite.

These electronic connections — often called satellite “handshakes” — did not provide the aircraft’s exact position.

But engineers were able to analyse characteristics of the signals to estimate its distance from the satellite at particular times.

Those calculations produced a series of possible position arcs.

Further analysis indicated that MH370 had most likely travelled south into the Indian Ocean rather than north through Asia. (Australian Transport Safety Bureau)

That conclusion transformed the search.

Investigators now faced an almost unimaginable task:

finding an aircraft somewhere beneath one of the largest, deepest and most remote stretches of ocean on Earth.

The seventh arc

The final satellite exchange became particularly important.

Analysis of the satellite data produced what became known as the seventh arc — a vast curved line representing possible locations of the aircraft at the time of its final satellite communication.

Investigators used satellite data, aircraft performance calculations, fuel modelling, ocean drift analysis and other information to narrow the likely impact region.

But an arc is not a point.

And that difference has haunted the search ever since.

The search moves south

The first search operations concentrated closer to MH370’s intended route.

Once satellite and radar analysis indicated that the aircraft had travelled elsewhere, attention shifted dramatically.

Australia eventually assumed responsibility for coordinating a major underwater search in the southern Indian Ocean at Malaysia’s request.

Aircraft, ships, sonar systems and specialist underwater equipment were deployed across an enormous area.

It found no main wreckage.

In January 2017, Malaysia, Australia and China suspended that phase of the search pending credible new evidence capable of identifying a more specific location. (Australian Transport Safety Bureau)

The first confirmed debris

Although the main aircraft remained missing, the ocean eventually began returning pieces of the story.

In July 2015, part of an aircraft wing known as a flaperon washed ashore on Réunion Island in the western Indian Ocean.

It was confirmed as coming from MH370.

Other pieces of debris later appeared around islands and coastlines of the western Indian Ocean and eastern Africa.

These discoveries provided powerful evidence that MH370 had indeed ended its flight somewhere in the Indian Ocean.

They also allowed scientists to use ocean-current and drift modelling in an attempt to work backwards towards the possible crash location.

The debris could narrow possibilities.

It could not reveal a precise resting place.

Why hasn’t MH370 been found?

The southern Indian Ocean is an exceptionally difficult environment in which to search for a missing aircraft.

The possible search region is vast.

Water depths can extend for several kilometres.

The seabed contains ridges, valleys, slopes and complex geological features.

Search vessels must operate thousands of kilometres from major ports and contend with severe weather and rough seas.

And perhaps most importantly, investigators have never had an exact last known position for the aircraft.

Instead, every major underwater search has been based upon probability.

Search teams have effectively been asking:

Given the satellite data, fuel endurance, aircraft performance, drift modelling and other evidence, where is the aircraft most likely to be?

If any important assumption in those calculations is slightly wrong, the wreckage may lie outside the area examined.

The 2018 Ocean Infinity search

In 2018, the private seabed exploration company Ocean Infinity conducted another search under an agreement with the Malaysian government.

Its advanced autonomous underwater vehicles surveyed additional areas of the southern Indian Ocean.

That search also failed to locate MH370.

Yet the aircraft remained missing.

What did the official investigation conclude?

Malaysia released its final safety investigation report in July 2018.

The investigators faced a fundamental limitation.

Without the main wreckage, cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder, they could not reconstruct the final hours of MH370 with the certainty normally expected from a major aviation accident investigation.

That point is crucial.

There are many theories about MH370.

Some are technically plausible.

Some rely upon selected pieces of evidence.

Some are highly speculative.

But none should be presented as established fact when the official investigation itself was unable to determine the cause.

Was MH370 deliberately diverted?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions.

The aircraft unquestionably deviated from its planned route.

Some of its communications systems also ceased operating.

Those facts have led many analysts to consider deliberate human intervention among the possibilities.

But identifying that possibility is not the same as proving who was responsible or why.

Without the aircraft’s recorders and other physical evidence, investigators have been unable to establish definitively what happened inside the cockpit or cabin.

Claims about particular individuals therefore require considerable caution.

Evidence should not be replaced by certainty simply because a theory appears persuasive.

What about mechanical failure?

Mechanical failure, fire, decompression and other emergency scenarios have also been examined.

A serious emergency could potentially explain some aspects of the aircraft’s behaviour.

But again, the evidence does not establish a single scenario capable of explaining every known event beyond reasonable doubt.

The fact that MH370 continued flying for hours after disappearing from normal air traffic control complicates simple explanations involving an immediate catastrophic failure.

Until the wreckage is recovered, technical theories remain difficult to confirm or eliminate conclusively.

The search resumes

Interest in renewed searches never disappeared.

Advances in seabed mapping, improved interpretation of satellite evidence and new analyses continued to produce proposed search areas.

Ocean Infinity returned to the southern Indian Ocean in a renewed attempt to locate the aircraft.

Its latest operation concluded in January 2026 without finding MH370. Across its search efforts since 2018, the company says it has mapped more than 140,000 square kilometres of seabed. (Ocean Infinity)

That did not necessarily mark the end.

In June 2026, Malaysia extended its agreement with Ocean Infinity for another year, through 30 June 2027, preserving the possibility of further searching. (Reuters)

So, as of August 2026, the central mystery remains unresolved:

MH370 has still not been located.

Why finding the wreckage matters

Finding MH370 is not simply about solving a mystery.

Aircraft accident investigations exist primarily to establish what happened and prevent it happening again.

Recovering the main wreckage could reveal structural evidence.

The flight data recorder could contain information about aircraft systems, altitude, speed and control inputs.

The cockpit voice recorder might provide evidence about what occurred on the flight deck during at least part of the event.

Physical examination might confirm or eliminate theories that cannot presently be resolved.

The 239 people aboard

The mystery surrounding MH370 can sometimes overshadow the human reality.

There were 239 people aboard the aircraft.

They came from numerous countries.

They were travelling for work, returning home, visiting family or simply making an ordinary international journey.

Their families were suddenly left without the certainty that usually follows even the most terrible aviation accident.

There was no identifiable crash site.

No main wreckage.

No complete explanation.

For those families, the disappearance created a particular kind of grief — one repeatedly renewed by new searches, new theories, new claims and new hopes that the aircraft might finally be found.

Any investigation of MH370 should remember that the object being searched for is not merely a Boeing 777.

It is the resting place of 239 people.

Why MH370 still matters

MH370 changed aviation.

It exposed the extraordinary fact that a modern long-range passenger aircraft carrying hundreds of people could effectively disappear from conventional tracking.

It forced aviation authorities to reconsider aircraft tracking, communications and the monitoring of flights over remote oceans.

It also demonstrated the value — and limitations — of unconventional evidence.

Satellite communications that were never intended to function as a tracking system became some of the most important evidence in the entire investigation.

Ocean drift modelling helped investigators interpret debris found thousands of kilometres away.

Radar, satellite engineering, oceanography and aircraft performance analysis all became pieces of one extraordinary puzzle.

And yet the most important piece remains missing.
